Letter to the Editor: Environmental Policy Alliance a front for ‘Dr. Evil’

It is more than a little ironic that Will Coggin of the “Environmental Policy Alliance” (Sierra Sun letter, “Trout Unlimited on national scale has shady agenda,” Aug. 22) expresses concern about Trout Unlimited’s agenda.

Google “Environmental Policy Alliance” and you will find that it shares a mailing address with Washington, D.C.-based lobbyist and front-group operator Richard Berman.

Only Berman and his bookkeeper wife know where their money comes from, but in the past they have been funded by Phillip-Morris, Tyson Foods, Monsanto and Cargill.

The “Environmental Policy Alliance” is one of several front groups operated by Berman’s company which work to attack minimum wage laws, food safety regulations, LEED certification and more.

On March 9, 2014, USA Today published an online oped authored by the “Environmental Policy Alliance” which argued that LEED Certifications are basically “useless.”

When asked about this by a Huffington Post staff member, the USA Today editorial board member said he was unaware of the connection between Berman and the Environmental Policy Alliance: “I thought I was up to date on their various incarnations.”

USA Today has since added a disclaimer to the online editorial. I think the Sierra Sun should do the same, and clearly identify the “Environmental Policy Alliance” for what it is — a front group for an individual once described by 60 Minutes as “Dr. Evil.”
