Truckee baseball | Wolverines take two of three against Lahontan League

The Truckee baseball team went 2-1 in a Division I-A crossover tournament against the Lahontan League over the weekend. The Wolverines defeated Dayton 6-3 on Friday and Fallon 10-2 on Saturday before ending the tourney with a 13-7 loss to Fernley later Saturday.

The defending state champs got off to a slow start against the Dust Devils (1-4), who scored single runs in the first, third and sixth innings while blanking Truckee through six.

The Wolverines’ offense came alive in the seventh, however. They took over the lead with a six-run outburst, highlighted by a two-run home run off the bat of senior Chris Towle.

Senior Erik Holmer went 2-for-3 in the game, while Towle, Riley Guiragossian, Bradley VanSchoonhoven, Andy McKechnie and Travis Ferre contributed a hit apiece. Aside from Towle’s two RBIs on his blast, VanSchoonhoven and Guiragossian each drove in a run.

Ferre and Guiragossian pitched. Ferre started and went four innings, giving up two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out four. In three innings, Guiragossian, who earned the win, allowed a run on three hits and a walk while recording two strikeouts.

Truckee jumped out to an early 1-0 lead against Fallon (2-5) and extended it to 6-2 with a five-run third. The Wolverines added two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Fallon scored both its runs in the third.

By the time the Wolverines faced Fernley (4-2) they were running out of pitching, as both Holmer and Aaron Pado were unavailable to throw due to injuries.

Senior Jackson Rohlf, who caught seven innings against Fallon earlier in the day, started and lasted two innings. Gavin Broad and Ty Vaio pitched two innings apiece in relief as Truckee struggled defensively in the game, committing seven errors.

Truckee managed 11 hits, led by Thor Retzlaff’s 3-for-3 performance. Towle had two hits, both doubles, while Ferre and Pado also had two hits, and McKechnie and Broad each had one. Towle, Pado and Rohlf drove in two runs apiece, and McKechnie drove in one run.

The teams were tied after one inning, but Fernley scored six runs in the second and never trailed after that.

Truckee is now 3-6 overall.
