Rock Starz event to support Truckee’s KidZone Museum

TAHOE/TRUCKEE, Calif. — Rock Stars from all eras will appear at the KidZone Museum’s Annual Fundraiser at Dragonfly Restaurant in Truckee April 27, 6-11 p.m. Be certain to look twice: that rocker might just be your neighbor, your child’s teacher or your church’s minister stepping in for Big Night Out – Rock Starz.

The fundraiser’s mission is simple – have a good time while supporting the nonprofit Truckee children’s museum, whose exhibits are built by volunteers and with donated materials. Exhibits, activities, an indoor playground and more engage children’s curiosities, sparking interest in learning through play and discovery.

“Big Night Out – Rock Starz gives parents an opportunity to have a night of action-filled adult activity … Come dressed as your favorite musical artist; get some friends and be a band, or just dress like a rock star,” said Carol Meagher, executive director, KidZone Museum. “Prizes will be awarded for the best costumes.”

Ticket cost is $45 per person in advance, $50 at the door and includes one complimentary drink (beer and wine), dinner, dance music and video by DJ Patron (a.k.a. Alex Herrera), a silent and live auction and raffle. All proceeds go to the KidZone Museum. Tickets are on sale online at www.kidzonemuseum.org or call 530-587-KIDS (5437).

“For 11 years Dragonfly owners, Chef Billy McCullough and Phebe Bell, have supported this fundraiser and the Museum, and we can’t thank them enough. Last year’s event was a huge success, and we foresee the same outcome for this year, so buy your tickets early,” added Meagher.

The KidZone Museum strives to see big dreams come true in upcoming years. Volunteer visionaries (the board, donors) aspire to extend the Museum’s reach and programs to more children and their families in the Truckee/Lake Tahoe region.

“On Sept. 29, 2011 the Museum’s new outdoor nature play area opened after a year of preparation. The combined efforts of Teichert and Basalite included well over 100 hours of donated manpower to make this dream a reality,” said Meagher. “We hope one day to have an overall spacious center to expand our services to youth and to host music and family theatre events.”

This year’s Big Night Out – Rock Starz event sponsors include: Dragonfly, La Galleria, Bespoke, Suddenlink, Mountain Home Center, Atypical Design and Paragon PR.

The KidZone has evolved

In 1992 The Sierra Nevada Children’s Museum, now the KidZone Museum, was founded by a grassroots coalition of Truckee community members, parents and educators who saw the need to offer hands-on explorative education for children. During the past 20 years, KidZone memberships and daily visits have increased significantly.

A few years after the Museum opened in 1992, a children’s advocacy group began testing the community’s kindergartners using a national test which ranked appropriate child development. At that time, more than 60 percent of 5-year-olds in the North Tahoe/Truckee area were scoring below average on gross motor skill development.

Soon after, the Sierra Nevada Children’s Museum partnered with community members to build the current KidZone Museum facility, which opened in 2002.

Sierra Nevada Children’s Museum founding partners include Susan Ray and Judy Thomas, founders; Rich Welsch; Steve Gross; Michele Franke; Mary Hetherington; Hillary Humphreys, first volunteer executive director and Pamela Williams; Barb Wilkinson, KidZone Museum executive director emeritus.

KidZone Museum founding partners include the Community Collaborative of Tahoe Truckee; First Five Nevada County; First Five Placer County; Tahoe Truckee Unified School District; Truckee-Donner Recreation & Park District; Truckee Donner Public Utilities District; Truckee Family Club (aka Truckee Family Connection); and Truckee Tahoe Community Foundation.
