The American people have always had “a love affair with the First Ladies” of our country. Each First Lady contributed much to her husband’s administration and served our country well.
Our First Ladies came from different social and economical backgrounds, from different geographical regions, and had diverse educations. Each Lady served with grace, style, and some with a sense of humor — a few shine like stars.
Here are the First Ladies to be modeled (and a bit of trivia about each) for the Incline Village-Crystal Bay Republican Women’s Club on May 14.
Dolly Madison dazzled Washington with her social skills. She was the only First Lady whose life was threatened in 1812.
Edith Roosevelt was Teddy’s second wife. She served the poor.
Frances Cleveland was the only First Lady to be married in the White House.
Grace Coolidge was voted one of the most outstanding women of her time.
Lou Henry Hoover during the Boxer Rebellion transported medical supplies to the front lines on her bicycle.
Eleanor Roosevelt was given away at her wedding by her uncle President Teddy Roosevelt.
Mamie Eisenhower was considered one of the best dressed First Ladies.
Pat Nixon was born in Ely Nevada.
Betty Ford modeled for John Roberts Powers to pay her way through Martha Graham’s dancing school.
Jackie Kennedy stared in a TV documentary about the remodeled White House.
Claudia Alta Taylor (Lady Bird) Johnson’s favor TV show was “Gunsmoke” starring James Arness, even though he was an ardent Republican supporter.
Nancy Reagan majored in acting at Smith College and a family friend Zas Zu Pitts got her a bit part in Hollywood.
Barbara Bush’s father was the president of McCall’s magazines.
Hillary Clinton was an ardent supporter of Barry Goldwater when she was in high school. She was first a Republican!
We choose our models for different criteria. Some of ladies resemble the First Lady, some are great models and some are just good sports.
