North Shore chefs cook to help cancer patients

Fundraising and fine dining will merge Sunday at The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe when Tahoe Forest Health System Foundation holds its annual Best of Tahoe Chefs event.

“The theme this year is ‘Hollywood Nights,’ so we’re encouraging guests to come as they are, or come dressed as their favorite star,” said Martha Simon, Tahoe Forest Health System Foundation’s director of fund development.

Now in its 14th year, Best of Tahoe Chefs brings numerous North Shore chefs together with donors for a variety of culinary treats. The event started in 1999, Simon said, when Truckee chefs Gary Bulmer and Billy McCullogh began working with the foundation and came up with the idea of engaging local culinary talent for a benefit. The idea gained steam and Best of Tahoe Chefs has been a success ever since.

All of the net proceeds go to the Gene Upshaw Memorial Tahoe Forest Cancer Center patient and family Programs, Simon said. The programs provide patients with resources like transportation, accommodation and other secondary demands of cancer treatment.

Best of Tahoe Chefs raised $170,529 in 2012. The 400 tickets available always sell out, Simon said.

Guests will arrive to appetizers and wine tasting in the lobby, before moving into the ballroom for a wide variety of main courses and desserts. Donors can bid on chefs for personal engagements at both live and silent auctions.

Live music will be featured as well, with Sacramento’s Big Dance Motown Band performing classic tunes for guests.
