Electric funk lights up Crown Room

The U.K. meets the Bay in a North Shore funk fest this weekend, when Afrolicious and Eddie Roberts’ West Coast Sounds play Crystal Bay Casino’s Crown Room.

Outsized San Francisco-band Afrolicious brings a collective approach to funk. The band first started out as a weekend dance party group, before founder Joe McGuire and brother Oz McGuire started collaborating with other Bay Area artists in 2010, according to the group’s website. The group now includes anywhere from eight to 13 musicians, depending on the show.

Afrolicious performances feature a wide array of musicianship, with deejays, percussionists, vocalists and live instruments all contributing to the group’s far-reaching sound. Demand for that sound has been growing, with Afrolicious performing at notable locales like Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Burning Man and the Great American Music Hall in recent years. The group has also appeared at South Lake Tahoe’s SnowGlobe Music Festival.

Eddie Roberts’ West Coast Sounds will also play the Crown Room Friday.

While achieving notoriety with British funk-jazz band The New Mastersounds during the last 15 years, guitarist Eddie Roberts has always felt drawn to the San Francisco Bay Area.

“The fourth show I ever played in the states was at the Boom Boom Room with the New Mastersounds, and we fit right in,” Roberts said on the group’s website, “We played the High Sierra Music Festival afterwards, and the reaction was heartwarming. We arrived as nobody, and left with a Bay Area fan club.”

The British musician moved to San Francisco in 2011, and put together a new group with Wil Blades (keys), Jermal Watson (drums), Joe Cohen (tenor sax) and Mike Olmos (trumpet). The group features horns, rocking drum beats and Roberts’ signature funky licks, all rolled into one upbeat groove-jazz jam.

Eddie Roberts’ West Coast Sounds released its debut album, “It’s About Time” in 2012.
