Glass Half Full: We truly are blessed to live in Incline Village

My husband and I just experienced our first Red, White, and Tahoe Blue. Much like the Trail of Treats, it was/is an event described as impossible to imagine in advance, and the description for both is apt. Nobody does Fourth of July and Halloween like Incline Village!

Surely the sheer numbers of visitors to our little town were impressive in their own rights for those four July days. As we battled “traffic jams,” long lines at Raley’s, and difficulty finding parking places, it was important to remember how helpful to the local economy all those folks were. I gather lots of permanent residents leave town during that week. Certainly that is a proactive choice. At the same time, we need the influx of tourists now and again.

It wasn’t the number of visitors that most impressed me during the Fourth of July, however; it was the sheer volume of Incline Village residents who volunteered their time, talents, and good humor to create and sustain Red, White, and Tahoe Blue. In fact, it’s difficult to imagine a town anywhere in which there are more dedicated and effective volunteers.

From those who sold ducks to those who manned the races, to those who served breakfasts and brats and wine and cheese, to the organizers and performers of “Les Mis,” to the parade marshals, to the ticket takers at various beaches and events, to the RW&TB committee, and to everyone in between, our town put on its best face.

There are many benefits to living in Incline Village, Nev. I count among them the very real sense of civic pride and spirit of neighborliness that genuinely line our streets every day. Sometimes it takes a stampede of tourists to remind us of how blessed we are to live in such a community.
