Eclectic rock band Tracorum bound for Truckee stage

The Bay Area’s Tracorum will fill PJ’s Bar and Grill in Truckee with some self-described “rock ‘n’ soul with some cosmic gospel thunder funk” Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 6.

Tracorum is Fletcher Nielsen (piano, vocals), Derek Brooker (guitar), Mark Calderon (bass) and Ian Herman (drums).

The group takes its name from a magical spell in Disney’s 1971 “Bedknobs and Broomsticks,” Nielsen said in an April interview with Lake Tahoe Action.

Tracorum was formed in 2006 and has since been touring heavily both in and beyond the U.S.

The band went on hiatus in 2011 after Nielsen’s mother passed away. Tracorum regrouped in 2012 and recorded its third album “Tricked.” The album was released in January.

“On ‘Tricked’ the sound is obviously more developed,” Nielsen said in the April interview. “It’s a collection of all new songs, a combination of rock, the southern sound that we do live and some of the songwriter craft type stuff.”

With the wide variety of influences in the band, it can take some work to match each night’s set with the venue and audience, Nielsen said.

“We’re very eclectic,” he said in the interview. “We play all different types of music during a show. We’ll go from a New Orleans-sounding thing or a rock ballad to whatever. For us the challenge is always to sort of navigate the room.”
