Back to School: What’s in store for Harvest of the Month

TAHOE/TRUCKEE, Calif. — For the past six years, the Harvest of the Month Program has taught students about good nutrition by tasting and exploring seasonal, fresh produce in the classroom.

This year, students in TTUSD will get to explore more local and organic produce as a result of a partnership with Susie Sutphin, co-founder and executive director of the Tahoe Food Hub. The Tahoe Food Hub makes the connections between small-scale, regional, farmers and new markets such as restaurants, schools and hospitals.

Students will taste butternut and spaghetti squash in October, grown by Mountain Bounty Farm in Nevada City. Not only will these squash be at their peak in terms of ripeness, flavor, and nutritional content, but students can now make the connection between the food and the farm. Squash really couldn’t be grown any closer!

Harvest of the Month will partner with other local farmers for persimmons, mandarins, and possibly turnips.

In addition, the TTUSD school meal program will work with the Tahoe Food Hub to offer more locally grown fruits and vegetables. They will include the Harvest of the Month featured produce on the menus as well.

You may have heard of Mountain Bounty Farm because they run a year round CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) Program in Tahoe–Truckee. Members of the CSA buy “shares” and in return receive a box of seasonal produce each week through the farming season. Learn more at http://mountainbountyfarm.com.
