Boys & Girls Club of North Lake Tahoe receives $10,000 Explore Fund grant

TAHOE, Calif. — The North Face has awarded a $10,000 Explore Fund grant to the Boys & Girls Club of North Lake Tahoe (BGCNLT) for Powder Hounds — the Club’s ski and snowboard program, also generously supported by Vail Resorts ECHO.

The Explore Fund’s mission is to inspire and enable the next generation of explorers by funding nonprofit organizations working to connect children with nature. By encouraging an active healthy lifestyle and protection of natural landscapes, a stronger connection of youth to the outdoors can be nurtured. Powder Hounds aims to take children who may not otherwise have the opportunity outdoors during to ski and snowboard at Northstar California.

They are provided with instructors, rentals, gear, and encouragement. BGCNLT was selected from more than 500 applications submitted for in 2013 because of BGCNLT’s commitment to inspiring and enabling young people to reach their highest potential. Since The Explore Fund was initiated in 2010, The North Face has provided more than $1 million in grants to nonprofits all over the world, with more than three quarters of that going to programs in the United States.

Mindy Carbajal, executive director of BGCNLT said, “The Boys & Girls Club is honored and thankful to be a recipient of the North Face Explore Fund grant. We are excited to be a part of a national movement to inspire youth to explore the outdoors.”

The Boys & Girls Club of North Lake Tahoe was established in 1998 to provide the area with high quality and affordable childcare and youth development opportunities. For 15 years, the Club has provided crucial and fun opportunities for thousands of local youth. Currently, more than 800 children are members annually and during the school year, more than 250 attend the Club daily.

In addition, BGCNLT has been able to advance the mission exponentially with the support of several important partner organizations.

IT TAKES A VILLAGE

Vail Resorts ECHO has been central to the club’s success — providing in-kind support for the Powder Hounds, transportation for summer programs and field trips, and monetary funding for Club programming. The Club also partners with The North Tahoe Public Utility District, TTUSD, the Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation, the North Tahoe Family Resource Center and more. The 15 years of success and service is possible because of these crucial relationships.

Powder Hounds 2013-14 will begin in January of 2014. Registrations will be available at the Club in November. To learn more about BGCNLT and Powder Hounds visit www.bgcnlt.org.
