TAHOE/TRUCKEE, Calif. — The SnowFest! Queen Contest is a fantastic opportunity to raise money for local nonprofit organization and to extend the pageantry that has been an important part of past winter carnivals.
Queen candidates are sponsored by nonprofit organizations who give back to the community through various programs. The queen candidate and sponsoring entity raise money for the organization and for SnowFest! through raffle ticket sales. Each of the nonprofits receive 50 percent of the money they collect.
SnowFest! gathers the raffle prizes, pays all of the expenses and receives the remaining proceeds.
The Queen is chosen based on several criteria including money raised, the results of an interview, an essay, GPA and a resume. Judging is done by the SnowFest! Queen Committee.
The 2014 SnowFest! Queen will be crowned at Opening Ceremonies at Squaw Valley on Friday, Feb. 28. The Queen and her court are required to participate in the Tahoe City and Kings Beach parades, and they are encouraged to attend additional SnowFest! events of their choice.
Queen candidates must be girls 16 or older who are students at any of local high school in North Tahoe, Incline and Truckee. The Queen receives a $500 scholarship check upon graduation from high school. Each member of her court receives a $100 scholarship check upon graduation.
The deadline to enter the Queen Contest is Jan. 17. Raffle tickets will be available to sell in December — candidates are encouraged to sign up early.
