Expanded hours, fares on tap for Donner Summit Shuttle

TRUCKEE, Calif. — The Donner Summit Shuttle will no longer be free to all riders this winter.

The service will allow employees of shuttle funding partners Sugar Bowl, Boreal and Soda Springs to ride for free with a valid resort ID card, but non-employee passengers will be charged a fare.

For a one-way trip, adults will be charged $2.50; seniors, disabled, and children under 12 will pay $1; and children under 3 ride free.

This fare — the same charged for Truckee’s non-winter fixed route service — is intended to offset the cost of this year’s more frequent service, said Kelly Beede, parking services manager for the town of Truckee.

Last winter the shuttle provided five runs over a 12-hour period, with a three-hour mid-day break. This winter, hourly service will be provided within Truckee from 6:15 a.m. to 6:15 p.m.

“The expanded hours and more consistent service is to better serve the community,” Beede said.

Riders will have access to Sugar Bowl, Boreal, Donner Ski Ranch and Soda Springs, with three morning runs and two afternoon runs going to the summit.

This year’s route includes serving the Pioneer Trail/Comstock Drive/Alder Drive loop and a stop at Tahoe Forest Hospital. Daily service will run from Dec. 19, 2013, to March 30, 2014, a total of 102 operating days.

Estimated cost is $147,392, with $90,865 contracted with Gold Country Telecare, $50,391 for fuel/maintenance/repairs and $6,136 for management oversight.

The town of Truckee will pay $98,810 out of its 2013-14 transit budget through state transportation funds. Sugar Bowl, Boreal and the North Lake Tahoe Resort Association will cover the remaining $48,582.

Changes to the Donner Summit Shuttle follow recommendations within the recently approved Eastern Nevada County Transit Development Plan, Beede said, which calls for extended hours of service and a similar schedule between winter and non-winter transit service within Truckee.
