IVGID Tip | How to be sun-safe on the slopes

EDITOR’S NOTE: “Tip of the week” is a periodic feature running in the North Lake Tahoe Bonanza, in partnership with the Incline Village General Improvement District, providing locals with various tips pertaining to the recreation opportunities and services the district provides.

January is National Ski Areas Association Safety Month and a great time to remind ourselves of how to be safe and have fun on the slopes.

When you are enjoying the slopes in Tahoe it’s important to not only follow the trail signage, stay in control, and be aware of your surroundings, but also to be sun-safe. The sun feels stronger in Tahoe because high elevation exposes your skin to more radiation and the sun reflects off the snow and lake.

Here are a few tips on how to be sun safe while enjoying the outdoors this winter:

Stay Covered: The best defense against the sun is to cover up as much as possible. Wear long sleeves, pants and gloves, even on sunny days. If it’s too warm for a jacket and gloves, opt for a thin base layer or long sleeve shirt and liners.

Slather Up: Apply SPF 30+ sunscreen on exposed skin before you hit the slope and reapply every couple hours. Use sunscreen on sunny, cloudy, and snowy days. Waterproof, sweat proof or sport sunscreens work best for the snow since you could get wet or work up a sweat.

Protect Your Head: Wear a hat or helmet to shield your scalp and ears from the sun. Not only are helmets important for safety on the slopes but they can keep you warm on cold days and protect you from the sun.

Shield Your Eyes: Protect your eyes with 100 percent UVA/UVB goggles or sunglasses. Since the sun reflects off the snow, look for close fitting sunglasses that wraparound and block the sun from all angles. Goggles are a better choice on snowy days and also help block out the wind.
