Celebrate the end of the year of the snake and the beginning of the year of the horse at Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe this weekend.
Last Friday marked the beginning of the Chinese Lunar New Year and seven days of celebrations for hundreds of millions of people around the world.
Mt. Rose will celebrate the new year all day Saturday, with lion dances and kung fu demonstrations beginning at 12:30 p.m. at the resort’s main lodge, according to the resort’s website.
Under the Chinese lunar calendar, each year is named after one of 12 animals: Rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog or pig.
“According to the system, the universe is made up of five elements – earth, water, fire, wood and metal – which interact with the 12 animals, resulting in the specific character of the year ahead,” according to a Jan. 31 article on www.theguardian.com.
Last year was the year of the water snake and this year will mark the year of the wooden horse under the calendar.
“Years of the wooden horse are associated with warfare,” the article continues. “The battle of Dien Bien Phu, which ended with the defeat of France by the Vietnamese, happened in 1954 and 1894 saw the start of the first Sino-Japanese war.”
Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe is located at 22222 Mt. Rose Highway.
