Meet Capt. Sutter at Truckee’s History Alive!
The Truckee Library, the Friends of the Truckee Library, and the Truckee Donner Historical Society announced Swiss emigrant and early settler Capt. John A. Sutter will visit to talk about his early days in California. Join David Fenimore as Capt. Sutter on Thursday, March 27 at 7 p.m. at the Veteran’s Hall in Truckee. Carpooling is encouraged, and a $10 donation is suggested.
Capt. Sutter’s visit will be followed by the appearances of Virginia Reed Murphy on June 27, and the old mountain man Caleb Greenwood on Sept. 18, for continuation of the Truckee’s History Alive! series.

Hearts for Arts fundraiser
Arts For the Schools is pleased to announce this year’s Hearts for Arts event. This year’s musical performing act is the Joe Craven Trio with special guest Hattie Craven on Friday March 28, 7-9 p.m., at the Community Arts Center, 10046 Church St. in Truckee. A free taco bar will be open from 6-7 p.m. A no host beer and wine bar will be open 6-9 p.m. (or until concert ends). Admission is $25 and includes food and music. Tree Top Co-ops and Forest Charter School informational meetings
Forest Charter School will hold prospective student informational meetings for the 2014/2015 school year for in the Pioneer Center on the first floor of the Sierra Building. Tree Top Co-op supports individualized learning styles through community engagement, a safe and positive school environment, interactive approaches to standards-based education. The small, site-based class sizes allow for creative instruction through thematic units, outdoor, and experiential education.

Truckee Library Spanish Storytime
The Truckee Library will host a bilingual storytime every last Saturday of the month. Story reader Reyna Sanchez-Lopez will present lively books and activities to introduce children to the wonders of reading and the treasure of books at the Library. Sing songs, learn rhymes, hear stories, and get library cards for yourself and your children.
Truckee resident Reyna Sanchez-Lopez has worked as an instructor of independent living skills to the disabled, as an advisor to the Nevada County Library Literacy Service concerning health education, and she may have greeted you at KidZone Museum.
Spanish Storytime will run 10:30-11 a.m. The programs are best for children ages 3 to 6, but all are welcome.
Old school Little League
Little League Baseball is celebrating it’s 75th Anniversary this season. Truckee Little League is looking for individuals who played during the first 10 seasons of Little League, 1961-1971. If you know of anyone, send an email to email@example.com. Include the player’s name, the year(s) they played and a photo if available. Little League would like to recognize these individuals during Opening Day celebrations on Saturday, April 26.
Nominate now for Linda Brown Fellows Awards & Star Awards
The Tahoe Truckee Excellence in Education Foundation is accepting nominations for the 2014/2015 Linda Brown Fellows Awards and the Star Awards. Linda Brown Fellows Award recipients each receive $2,000 to be used to enhance educational work within the district. In addition, both Linda Brown Fellows awards recipients and Star Award recipients receive $1,000 for their personal use.
The Fellows Program was created to help promote and acknowledge excellence in education. It was named in honor of Linda Brown, a longtime teacher in the school district and a past president of the Excellence in Education Foundation. The honor is presented to outstanding teachers and staff members who demonstrate originality, innovation and dedication.
The Star Award recognizes classified employees who positively impact the lives of the students by providing outstanding support in their positions. All certificated and classified employees in the TTUSD who are employed for at least 80 percent of the school year are eligible for the awards.
The Foundation is asking the community to help identify and celebrate more of these wonderful educators. Award nominations may come from parents and community members, as well as any TTUSD faculty or staff member.
Self-nominations or nominations from Excellence in Education board members will not be accepted. Nomination forms can be found at all district schools, the district office, or www.exined.org, and must be postmarked or hand delivered to the Excellence in Education office at 11071 Donner Pass Road in Truckee by Thursday, May 1, 2014.
The 2014-2015 recipients will be announced in the fall.

Become an English tutor
You can help adults in Truckee improve their reading, writing, and speaking. Volunteer to become an English tutor with the Read Up! program, a free tutoring service based out of the Truckee Library. There will be a tutor training in March in Truckee for new tutor incumbents at a mutually convenient time. Books and training are provided. English tutoring is an enjoyable and productive opportunity to give back to the community. You must be at least 18 years of age.
