Backpack demo hike

July 20, 10 a.m. and Aug. 14, 10 a.m., Tahoe Rim Trail Trailhead, at the summit of Mt. Rose Highway. Free event, score gear from Deuter and Tahoe Mountain Sports, sponsors of these gear-testing treks. They will have packs of all shapes and sizes. Participants can test multiple packs throughout the hike. Travel three miles from the Mt. Rose Trailhead to the wildflower-framed Galena Falls. Once at the falls, enjoy a snack break, a pack fitting discussion and photo opportunities before heading back to the trailhead. Sugar Pine Foundation hikes

Hikes with TRTA July 17 and Aug. 18. Hike to the waterfall at Van Sickle State Park with guides from the Tahoe Rim Trail Association and interpreters from SPF. They will talk about forest health and how to identify tree species. Sign up at www.tahoerimtrail.org to see firsthand plant regeneration after a fire and photograph beautiful views of the lake.

It is topic mostly ignored and avoided. Nevada has one of the highest suicide rates in the country among veterans, both men and women. Wanderlust flowing to town

Wanderlust Festival, the world’s largest and fastest growing yoga and music festival, will return for a fifth year to Squaw Valley July 18-21.

In addition to yoga and live music, attendees will enjoy organic food and wine, an inspirational speaker program, meditation and outdoor activities, such as paddle boarding, hiking, biking, and running. The yogis teaching and speaking are considered rock stars of the discipline and include Seane Corn, Shiva Rea, Dharma Mittra, Rod Stryker, Gurumkh Kaur Khalsa, Schuyler Grant and more.

The music lineup is equally impressive with Moby, Gramatik, Caravan Palace, Random Rab, Quixotic, Hannah Thiem, East Forest, MC Yogi, DJ Drez and Fabian Alsultany.

USTA Quick Start youth tennis camp

Ages: 6-12 years. This tennis camp focuses on stroke production, techniques, match play and tennis rules through specialized activities and drills. The camp also promotes teamwork, sportsmanship and a high emphasis on fun! Classes are taught by certified USPTA instructors. Other activities in the camp may include swimming and games. Monday through Thursday, one-week sessions through Aug. 22. Cost is $219, with IVGID pass $175. Daily drop-in: $69, with IVGID pass $55 (if space available). Competitive junior tennis academy

This high powered, intense program is designed for the student looking to take their game to the next level. Players seeking to compete in tournament play as well as high school and college tennis will find this program is exactly what they need! Daily drop-in upon availability only. Monday through Thursday (minimum of four students required). Two-week sessions through Aug. 22. Cost is 9 to 12 years, $225, with IVGID pass $180, drop-in $29, with IVGID pass $23; 13-plus, cost is $275, with IVGID pass $220, drop-in: $37, with IVGID pass $30. Pickleball at the tennis center

Pickleball is a fun sport for all ages, played on a modified tennis court with the net lowered to 34 inches at the center. It is played with a perforated plastic baseball (similar to a whiffle ball) and wood or composite paddle. It is easy for beginners to learn, and can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players. Court No. 8 has been lined for Pickleball. Please inquire about reservations, scheduled drop-in times, and socials. Equipment rental is available. A minimum of four people is required for play. Jazzercise new student special

Two weeks free for full-time, local residents. Jazzercise is a fun and challenging 60-minute total body workout that combines aerobics, strength training and stretching. Move to hot, current music — all ages are welcome.

Volunteer with Kids & Horses

Kids & Horses, northern Nevada’s only premier certified therapeutic riding center located in Minden seeks to recruit volunteers to work in their equine-assisted therapeutic riding lessons. Horse experience is a plus but not a requirement. Lessons at Kids & Horses run Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays, 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m.

People of all ages over 14, no upper age limit, are encouraged to offer time and skills including helping out with fundraising events and mentoring from experienced and passionate instructors.
