North Lake Tahoe and Truckee health and wellness announcements

TAHOE/TRUCKEE, Calif. —Tahoe Forest Health System will begin hosting community blood drives beginning in September. The first community blood drive is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 12, 7-11 a.m. at the Tahoe Forest Hospital Eskridge Conference Room. Appointments are available at unitedbloodservices.org or by calling 530-582-6414. With each donation, donors receive a free total cholesterol test and earn points in United Blood Services’ Hero in Me rewards program. Donating blood takes about one hour.

Volunteer blood donors must be at least 16 years of age, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and be in good health. Additional height/weight requirements apply to donors 22 years of age and younger, and donors who are 16 years of age must have signed permission from a parent or guardian. Minding Your Stress, Finding Connection

Taught by Jackie Griffin, RN, BSN, Wednesdays, Sept. 11-Oct. 2, 5-6 p.m. at For Goodness Sake in downtown Truckee. Cost: Sliding scale $20-$100; no one turned away. A workbook and guided meditation CD will be provided. Experience: Increased self-awareness, trust and acceptance, more effective coping, more accepting attitude to life and challenges, decrease in chronic pain, lasting decreases in stress-related symptoms, significant decreases in anxiety and depression, improved concentration and creativity, and improved immune system functioning. Betsy Watson nursing scholarship

The Truckee Sunrise Rotary Club announced applications are now being accepted for the Betsy Watson nursing scholarship awarded annually to an outstanding area nursing student. The $1,000 scholarship grant will honor the memory of Elizabeth “Betsy” Watson, a long-time professional nurse, nursing educator and nursing administrator at Tahoe Forest Hospital in Truckee. Betsy Watson, crowned the 2004 Nurse of the Year at Tahoe Forest Hospital, spent more than 20 years nursing. She passed away after a long struggle with cancer in May 2008. CSAC awards Nevada County

The California State Association of Counties (CSAC) honored Nevada County’s Behavioral Health Department with two Challenge Awards. The Innovation Award was given for successful work in children’s mental health and a Merit Award for the department’s Social Security Benefits Advocacy program. This year, CSAC received more than 200 Challenge Award entries in its four population categories. An independent panel of judges with expertise in county programs and challenges selected the award recipients. Representatives of CSAC will formally present these awards at an upcoming Board of Supervisors meeting.
