Fall lacrosse sign ups open

The Truckee-Donner Recreation & Parks Department (TDRPD) fall lacrosse program is offering local youths an opportunity to learn the sport with Stanford University Coach Drew Virk, as well as the Tahoe Dawgs Men’s Lacrosse Club, during special “guest coaching” sessions. Virk, former collegiate and professional lacrosse player will direct several of the team’s practices. Tahoe Dawgs will be provide a learning experience when they take on the TDRPD’s Truckee Tribe in a Reno scrimmage, designed to give the kids an on-field, live-action coaching session. Sign up for the fall program, held Tuesdays and Fridays, 4-6 p.m. at Riverview Sports Park by calling the TDRPD at 530-582-7720. Registration will remain open until Sept. 16.

Join Slow Food

Slow Food USA members are the lifeblood of its organization, providing the necessary financial support to power the organization’s devotion to living slow and making “good, clean and fair food for all” a reality. Slow Food Membership allows its members to connect with like-minded people. Slow Food Lake Tahoe’s offers annual workshops on canning, backyard chicken raising, and homebrewing along with a High Sierra Edible Garden Tour, Cooking Outside the Box (Community Supported Agriculture-inspired dinner and cooking demo) and live Local Chefs’ Challenge. Cannabis Initiative meeting

Wednesday, Sept. 11, 6:30-8 p.m. at Zano’s Family Italian Restaurant, 11401 Donner Pass Road, Truckee. Speaker: Vice Chair Gary Bryant. Subjects: Petition signing for Nevada County Medical Cannabis Initiative; to overturn current County ordinance and return to Prop 215 regulation. AAUW The Big Picture

River Talk for Weed Warriors

Tahoe Sierra Century Ride

Celebrating its 11th anniversary, the annual Tahoe Sierra Century Ride is slated for Saturday, Sept. 14. Benefiting North Tahoe’s middle and high school music programs, this fall favorite has earned praise for its scenic routes, challenging hill climbs (60 and 100 mile routes), full support services and legendary after-party featuring awesome food, drink and (of course!) live student music. Class of 1973 to hold reunion

The Truckee-Tahoe High School Class of 1973 will hold their 40th re-union at the home of Art and Kim Diaz in Truckee on Sept 14., 1 p.m. The fee is $25 per person. Resorting to madness?

The Friends of Squaw Valley invite you to a special showing of the documentary, “Resorting to Madness,” followed by an interactive discussion with its producer Hunter Sykes. The film addresses the impacts of the modern ski resort industry on mountain communities and environments. Included is footage and interviews from dozens of ski areas, experts, and concerned community members throughout North America. The event will be held at the Resort at Squaw Creek, Sept. 14, 6-9 p.m., and will include an update on the KSL proposed development. Admission is free, but donations are encouraged. Wonderful raffle prizes will be available.

Latino College Night

Learning Bridge of the Sierra and the Tahoe-Truckee Unified School District are co-sponsoring Latino College Night on Sept. 17, 6-8 p.m. at Kings Beach Elementary in Spanish. Learning Bridge of the Sierra, a local nonprofit, offers help to English and Spanish speakers with the college application, financial aid, and completion process through one-on-one counseling service, Life After High School, on a sliding scale. TTUSD counselors are also expert resources for college admission and financial aid.

Final free Summer Music Series concert

The last Summer Music Series Concert is Wednesday, Sept. 17, 6 p.m. at the Truckee Regional Park Amphitheater. MONTANA, one of the most popular bands in the history of the Summer Music Series plays the Santana sound. The concert was originally scheduled for Aug. 21, but was cancelled due to thunder showers. As always, Truckee Donner Recreation & Park District brings you free concerts for your listening enjoyment.

Truckee Tahoe Republican Women

The September general meeting of the Truckee Tahoe Republican Women Federated will be held Tuesday, Sept. 17, at 11:15 a.m. at Rosie’s Cafe in Tahoe City. The speaker will be Susan Tully, National Field Director, from the Federation for American Immigration Reform. Luncheon meeting cost is $20, pay at the door. Any interested Republican is welcome. Party for state test scores

In celebration of the fantastic gains with state test scores (a 24 point increase), Truckee Elementary School, in collaboration with Alder Creek Middle School is having a party! This will be a dance celebration with healthy desserts supplied by the nutrition department. The students and teachers worked very hard and it paid off. Music lessons and classes

Tahoe Music Institute is currently registering students for fall session of lessons and classes, which are taught by highly qualified and motivated instructors. Lessons are available to students of all ages in piano, guitar, bass, voice, woodwind, brass, and percussion. This season’s classes include an adult guitar class, a youth chorus, a jazz combo, and a chamber music series. Lessons and classes start after Labor Day.
