Community acupuncture clinic

Protect yourself from cold and flu

Mammograms available

Throughout the month of October, Tahoe Forest Hospital will offer a free gift for anyone getting a first-time mammogram. TFH also will hold a drawing for a free mammogram. If you refer a friend who is a first-timer, you both get a free gift. Funding is available for a limited number of screening through a special grant made available by the Susan G Komen for the Cure Foundation. Briner Imaging at Tahoe Forest Hospital offers the latest in digital mammography. Screening exams are quick, easy and read by board-certified radiologists. No doctor order is necessary for a screening mammogram. Follow-up care is available. To schedule call 530-582-6510.

Lake Tahoe Women Wellness Weekend

Hosted by Granlibakken Resort, Tahoe City, Nov. 9-10, cost $109. Granlibakken Resort will host the annual Lake Tahoe Women’s Wellness Weekend (WWW), Nov. 9 and 10. This long-loved program is alive with a complete schedule of speakers, exercise classes, vendor booths, health fair, food and wine. Medical doctors and health professionals present information on weight management, plastic surgery, addiction, common nutrient deficiencies and more. The event starts on Saturday with an optional yoga class (7 a.m.) and ends with a Zumba Party (4 p.m.) on Sunday. WWW is $109, additional charge for lodging and continuing education credit. Winter sports conditioning class

Winter sports conditioning focuses on sports specific strength, flexibility, balance, endurance, agility and coordination. Each class will include a warm-up, group drills, stretch, 10-station circuit, sports specific tips and informational handouts. Plus the program will begin and end with a “Ski or Boarding Fitness” assessment. Youth-friendly class starts Sunday Oct. 20. Youth ages 9 years and older can attend Sunday classes if accompanied by an adult. Dates: Through Dec. 15, Mondays, Wednesday, and Sundays (youth friendly Sundays), 9-10 a.m. at the Incline Village Recreation Center gym. Call 775-832-1310 or register at the front desk. Parents must complete a waiver for each youth attending. Free to Recreation Center members, $15 per adult, $13 senior, or $11 adult and $9 senior with IVGID pass. Winter Sports Conditioning Class Unlimited Pass: Adults $225 ($150 resident), senior $175 ($125 resident), $25 youth (Sundays only).

Red Ribbon contest announced

The National Family Partnership (NFP) announced the national contest for its 28th annual Red Ribbon Week, Oct. 23-31. This public service campaign helps parents and teachers prevent youth drug and alcohol abuse. Here’s how to enter to win $1,000 for your K-12 school and an iPad for the home: Students take the Red Ribbon Week message home by working alongside parents to decorate their front door, mailbox or fence with a red ribbon and this year’s theme “A Healthy Me Is Drug Free.” Take a photo with the family and your Red Ribbon Week decoration, then upload to redribbon.org/contest by Nov. 4 (must be 18+ to upload your photos).

The voting begins! Ask your family and friends to vote for your entry at redribbon.org/vote Nov. 5-19.

Weight Watchers meeting moved

The North Lake Tahoe Weight Watchers Meeting moved to Wednesday nights at the Tahoe Biltmore in the Nevada Room. Weigh-In 5:30-6 p.m., meeting starts at 6 p.m. New and old members are welcome. Free registration until Oct. 19. Call 1-800-537-6805 for information.

Shotokan karate

All ages. This class is designed for everyone interested in learning the art of karate. The beginner or the advanced student will be able to make great progress in self-defense and benefit from improved physical and mental health, self-discipline and self-confidence. This is an ongoing class, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7:10-8:40 p.m. Cost is $77.50, with IVGID pass $62 for 10-class punch card. Recreation Center, Group Fitness Room, with Gregg Henrikson.

Incline aquatics swim team

Ages 6-plus years. Join Incline’s premier swim team for both competitive and novice swimmers. USA Swimming certified coaches will evaluate appropriate level and practice times for each participant. Payment will be on a monthly basis. Scholarships that can equate savings of at least 29 percent are available (inquire at the Parks & Recreation Department Counter). Liquid cardio

All ages. An early morning aqua fitness workout that includes cardiovascular endurance, muscle strength and mobility fitness elements in both shallow and deep water.
