Soroptishop holiday event
More than 30 holiday shopping vendors will be featured at the 10th annual Soroptishop fundraiser on Nov. 21 at the Truckee Tahoe Airport Terminal, from 5 to 9 p.m. Wine and appetizers, provided by several popular local restaurants, are included with the $10 price of admission. Tickets are available at the door. This annual event is sponsored by Soroptimist International of Truckee-Donner. Courage House, a nonprofit home for the victims of sex trafficking, will receive 100 percent of the proceeds. The founder of the local Courage House, Bobbi Johansen, was the 30th annual recepient of the Soroptimist’s Ruby Award on Oct. 17. County furloughs planned
Most Nevada County offices will close Monday, Nov. 25 through Friday, Nov. 29 in observance of the November holiday and previously announced furlough days.
Closures will not impact access to public-safety and other 24-hour operations. The following departments will be open during designated furlough days: Departments of auditor-controller, district attorney, sheriff, probation, public works, registrar of voters, clerk-recorder, and public defender. The County encourages the community to plan ahead for needed services and to visit www.mynevadacounty.com for additional information on county departments. Soroptimist helping, honoring women
Since 1972, the Soroptimist Women’s Opportunity Awards program has provided women who serve as the family’s primary wage earners with financial resources to offset costs to attain higher education, skills and training. The award can be used for tuition, books, childcare, carfare or education-related expense. Soroptimist International of Truckee Donner will provide a $2,000 cash grant to its award recipient, who will advance to the Soroptimist Sierra Nevada Region level, where one recipient will receive $5,000. The program culminates with three finalist $10,000 awards.
The Violet Richardson Award honors young women ages 14-17 for volunteer action. SITD presents a $250 cash award to area winners, as well as a $250 donation to a nonprofit of their choice. Club-level winners then become eligible for one of 28 $1,000 awards. In addition $1,000 will be contributed to their volunteer organizations. One finalist will be chosen for another award, including a contribution of $2,500 to the finalist’s volunteer organization.

Sierra College spring class
Sierra College, Tahoe-Truckee serves students throughout the North Lake Tahoe, West Shore and Truckee region. Registration for spring semester begins Nov. 20. Classes begin Jan. 27 and the semester ends on May 24. Students can choose general education courses, AA degrees, transfer degrees and certificates in career and technical education. Signature programs include accounting, business administration, psychology, liberal arts, natural sciences, EMT training, administration of justice, human development (specifically early childhood) and Mechatronics.
The campus is located at 11001 College Trail in Truckee. The cost is $46 per unit. Tahoe Truckee Unified High School students are eligible to apply for the academic enrichment program to take Sierra College, Tahoe-Truckee classes for $1 a unit.
