Begins Monday, Jan. 6, 5:30 p.m. Series of six workshops, once a week, Mondays. Drop-ins welcome.
The Gene Upshaw Memorial Tahoe Forest Cancer Center, in conjunction with the Tahoe Forest Health System Wellness Neighborhood will host a series of workshops to help the community become nicotine-free. Trained clinical psychologists, nutritionists, pharmacists and clinicians will guide you through the process of kicking the nicotine habit. This program offers:

Relapse prevention support and strategies
Learn to quit without gaining weight
Learn different techniques to replace nicotine cravings
Keep yourself, your children, and non-smoking family members healthy

Free supportive care program in Incline Village
Exercise for Energy, for current and recovering patients. This free six-week class, “Exercise for Energy” is a supportive care program for current and recovering cancer patients: offering guidance, support, and useful tools to return to and maintain health and wellness beginning Jan. 15, 2014. Class will meet Wednesdays and Fridays, 12:30-1:30 p.m. at IVCH Physical Therapy and Medical Fitness, 333 Village Blvd., Ste. 201, at the corner of Village and Alder, one block from Incline Village Community Hospital.
The class will incorporate strengthening, stretching, breathing, balance, cardio, and wellness education. All classes are supportive, medically managed and taught by health professionals, and will give you the tools you need in a supervised environment.

Radon: What you don’t know could hurt you
The 2014 monthly lecture series from UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center begins Jan. 28 with a presentation on the dangers of radon. Eric Matus of the Nevada Radiation Control Program will lead a public lecture titled “Radon: What you don’t know could hurt you” beginning at 6 p.m. at the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences.
Radon is a colorless, odorless, radioactive gas that naturally emanates from rocks, soil and water. Unfortunately, radon can accumulate in a home and can cause serious health problems. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that 21,000 people in the United States die from radon-induced lung cancer each year — more than those who die from drunk driving, falls in the home, or secondhand smoke.
Matus will present an overview of radon, where radon originates, where it’s found, what it can do to you, how to test for it and what to do if your home has a radon problem. Free test kits will be offered to Nevada residents.
Eric Matus is a health physicist with the State of Nevada Radiation Control Program, within the Division of Public and Behavioral Health. He assesses and controls unnecessary exposure to ionizing radiation. He holds a B.S. in Environmental and Natural Resource Science from UNR, and studied health physics at Oak Ridge Associated Universities.
The Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences is located at 291 Country Club Drive in Incline Village on the campus of Sierra Nevada College.

Community snowshoe full moon hikes
This event encourages exercising in an inter-generational social setting for ages 9+ and is part of the Community Health and Wellness Outreach Initiative. There will be light fare available for those who would like to purchase dinner at the top.
