‘Earth Bar’ Tuesdays bring Nat Geo TV show to life

Tunnel Creek Cafe in Incline Village has been hosting the National Geographc TV show “The Legend of Mick Dodge,” followed by a live discussion with Dodge and the opportunity to craft your own earth-wear, some of which is featured on the show.

Jacquie Chandler, local leather designer and executive director of Sustainable Tahoe, made most of the leather garments worn on the show, and she brings leather and tools to the Earth Bar to share her expertise.

People attending have made a variety of items, from rock-climbing pouches to sheepskin vest, and enjoy fire-circle discussions about rains forests, ancestral skills, walking barefoot, and the Earthgym training program, which is an earth-based movement practice designed by Dodge and Chandler over the last 20 years.

Chandler has taught the Earthgym as a gym class at Sierra Nevada College for 3 years. Learn more at www.theearthgym.com.

“Since many people do not have a TV, the concept of having a place to share the show like a sports bar emerged,” Chandler said about creating the Earth Bar. “Add in the ability to talk to Mick and craft items you see in the show — wow. Imagine talking to the quarterback after you watch the game. This builds community around common value with a touch down focused on the earth.”

One Earthgym student and local artist, Tailor Pollak, who has crafted her own Barefoot Boots, gathering pouch and sheepskin vest shared her enthusiasm about the Earth Bar.

“This show is like a love story between a man and the forest. I learn something in every episode that reminds me of how sacred and fulfilling my relationship with nature really is,” Pollak said. “I am now working with Mick on designing ways for more people to stay connected with their own ancient wisdom.”

While other places are asking to host an Earth Bar, Chandler said the Earth Bar will continue to form at Tunnel Creek Cafe, located at 1115 Tunnel Creek Road.

The Earth Bar takes place Tuesdays, with leather crafting at 4 p.m., viewings of two Dodge episodes at 5 p.m. and a discussion at 6 p.m. with Dodge or one of the other stars from the show.
