IVGID Tip: Ski tips for seniors and active adults

EDITOR’S NOTE: “Tip of the week” is a periodic feature running in the North Lake Tahoe Bonanza, in partnership with the Incline Village General Improvement District, providing locals with various tips pertaining to the recreation opportunities and services the district provides.

Staying active in winter not only can lengthen your lifespan and keep you healthy, but skiing gives you the chance to meet other active people who like to spend time on the mountain.

Check out these ski tips for seniors and active adults to ensure a great time on the slopes:

Wear layers:  Stay warm on cold days and cool on warm days by layering up. Keep hand warmers in your pockets on cold days and wear long wool socks to keep your feet warm and dry.

Warmup exercises: Start your day with some stretching and strengthening exercises before you head on the hill. Loosening up your hamstrings and lower back can help avoid common ski injuries and keep you skiing longer.

Update your gear: If your skis are several years old, it may be worthwhile to rent skis or invest in a new pair. Ski technology has improved drastically in the last decade, making it easier to turn and an overall better experience. If you have your own skis it’s important to get your bindings checked every year to make sure they release properly.

Take a lesson: It’s never too late to learn or improve your skiing. A lesson provides tips on avoiding injuries, carving and turning on advanced-technology skis, and skiing safely to maintain your love of the sport for many years to come.

Participate in local senior programs: The Recreation Center offers several programs for adults ages 55+ to keep you healthy, fit, and in shape for skiing. Visit the Recreation Center or InclineRecreation.com for information on organized snowshoe hikes, group fitness classes, ski groups, and après ski activities.
