Lack of snow means early release for Tahoe-Truckee students

TRUCKEE, Calif. — This winter’s lack of snow likely means an early start to summer for Tahoe Truckee Unified School District students.

Originally, the 2013-14 calendar had June 18 as the last day of school, factoring in four snow days, only one of which was used. Weather permitting, students will get out June 13.

This comes at a time when the school board recently approved start and end dates for a revised 2014-15 school calendar in order add five staff development work days.

Those days will be used in part to address implementing Common Core State Standards, a shift in education to provide youth with knowledge and skills they need to be college- and career-ready in the 21st century, including critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity.

California adopted Common Core on Aug. 2, 2010, and is one of 45 original states to do so. Full implementation of the standards — limited to math and English language arts for now — is planned for the 2014-15 school year.

“I just want to acknowledge the teachers for agreeing to add in the staff development work days into the calendar,” said TTUSD board trustee Kristen Livak at the April 23 school board meeting. “... (It’s) just total evidence of the dedication that our teachers have to our kids and to learning and to embracing this change.”

Students will start next school year Aug. 28 and end June 19, factoring in three snow days. Originally, the 2014-15 calendar — which was approved last year — started Aug. 27 and ended June 17, with four snow days built in, said David Curry, TTUSD executive director of educational services.
