Wine and Wisdom fundraiser to feature ‘Towers of Gold’ author

On Thursday, Aug. 7, 5 p.m. noted author and historian Frances Dinkelspiel will be the featured speaker at Sugar Pine Point State park’s historic Hellman-Ehrman Mansion during the last 2014 summer “Wine and Wisdom” event.

Guests will be treated to a behind-the-scene tour of the 1903 landmark led by experienced docents. Immediately following, fine wines from Tahoe Ridge Winery and appetizers will be served on the front porch overlooking Lake Tahoe’s west shore.

As the sun sets, Dinkelspiel will share the amazing life story of her great-great grandfather Isais Hellman, who constructed the mansion a family summer retreat.

Dinkelspiel’s book, “Towers of Gold,” captures Hellman’s story during a pivotal moment in American history: the rise of California from a frontier economy driven by the barter of hides and the exchange of gold to an economic steam engine leading the nation.

Based on years of research and review of more than 50,000 archival documents, Frances Dinkelspiel’s history brings the early days of California to life. It also tells the little-known story of the Jewish contribution to the state’s settlement.

“Guests will view rooms of the mansion not available to the public, such as the third floor, and will also enjoy the enchanting Frances Dinkelspiel sharing her family history,” said Heidi Doyle, executive director of Sierra State Parks Foundation.

“Towers of Gold” will be available for purchase. The event is a fundraiser to provide for critically needed maintenance and repairs at the Hellman-Ehrman Estate.

Sugar Pine Point State Park is located 9 miles south of Tahoe City. The Wine and Wisdom program is $50 per person, which includes the park entry fee and a tour booklet. Space is limited to 40 guests and reservations are highly recommended. To purchase tickets call the Sierra State Parks Foundation office at 530-583-9911 or visit sierrastateparks.org/calendar.
