Mark Amodei’s Democratic challenger embarks on campaign tour

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — Incline Village native Kristen Spees, who will face incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. Mark Amodei in the November general election, began a campaign tour this week throughout Northern Nevada.

The tour started Monday in Lamoille, and included camping at Thomas Canyon Campground and hiking in the Ruby Mountains.

On Tuesday, Spees, a Democrat, traveled to Elko to meet with County Commissioner Grant Gerber. She traveled Wednesday to Owyhee to attend the Duck Valley Juvenile Service Center grand opening.

She’s scheduled to leave Wednesday for Winnemucca, where she’s expected to meet Humboldt County D.A. Michael Macdonald on Thursday, among other appearances.

Her tour wraps Friday with stops in Battle Mountain, Lovelock and Fernley.

“I am excited to travel across Northern Nevada and hear from the people directly, understand their needs, concerns, and thoughts on how to better serve them,” Spees, 27, said in a statement. “I’m eager to hit the pavement and discuss the issues that matter most to Nevadans.”

Spees, an Incline High graduate and former member of the school’s We The People AP government class, currently serves as an estate planning attorney licensed in Nevada, California and Hawaii, performing wills and trusts at her family law firm.

Spees won the Democratic primary in June, defeating Reno physician Vance Alm, Gardnerville store clerk Brian Dempsey and Reno engineer Ed Lee. In Washoe County, Spees received 5,682 votes, good for 39.28 percent,

Nevada’s second congressional district covers the northern part of Nevada and has never elected a Democrat. The district is 43 percent Republican, 33 percent Democratic and 17 percent registered nonpartisan.
