INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — Curious about getting into the backcountry? This winter, Tahoe Mountain Sports, in partnership with Diamond Peak Ski Resort, Dynafit and Tahoe Mountain School, is proud to announce the 2015 Backcountry Experience.

This guided backcountry tour will explore terrain in Diamond Peak’s Golden Eagle Bowl. Learn the most efficient uphill skinning methods, meet new people and enjoy un-skied terrain in a fun, controlled environment.

The Backcountry Experience tours, on Feb. 7 and 21, and March 14, are open to intermediate and advanced skiers and riders and are designed to provide a safe and welcoming introduction to backcountry skiing and boarding.

Alpine touring, also known as backcountry skiing or riding, is a great way to get some exercise and define your own, unique choice of getting down the mountain.

Alpine touring incorporates the use of skis or a snowboard that use a free heel binding in order to be able to walk uphill. Attached to those skis are “skins” that stick to the bases to help you walk uphill.

A more streamlined form of hiking, alpine touring allows participants to explore the backcountry in a calculated environment and then enjoy a spectacular ride down.

Alpine Touring started in Europe but quickly became popular in the United States about 20 years ago. As the slopes get more crowded, people are looking for alternatives that offer solitude and the freedom to travel without boundaries.

More gear is being developed to cater to this type of skier and additional opportunities abound to try this type of winter activity. Most people don’t need to change or upgrade any gear other than their bindings to be able to enjoy a backcountry experience.

The 2015 Backcountry Experience tour does include backcountry ski equipment so come try it out. Event details, pricing and registration are posted online at DiamondPeak.com/Events.

“IVGID Tip” is a bi-weekly feature running in the North Lake Tahoe Bonanza, in partnership with the Incline Village General Improvement District, providing locals with various tips pertaining to the recreation opportunities and services the district provides. This tip was provided by Diamond Peak Ski Resort and Tahoe Mountain Sports.
