IES rocks: A day of dirt, service and community

On May 16 and 17, Incline Elementary School partnered with the Parasol AmeriCorps Program to help connect our local students with their community.

Part one of the IES Rocks service project took place in March when all 17 of the Parasol AmeriCorps team members were welcomed into the IES classrooms to present what is an AmeriCorps Volunteer.

The students were educated on teamwork, community service, the four categories of service and the seventeen different roles that the AmeriCorps members of North Lake Tahoe fill in their community.

This May, AmeriCorps members teamed up with the students and teachers of Incline Elementary School to participate in part two of the new IES Rocks! A Day of Dirt, Service and Community initiative project for two days of volunteerism and outdoor school beautification projects and activities.

The project was aimed at teaching young community members the importance of volunteerism and community connectivity. All students participated in activities outlined per grade.

The service activities included: creating a rock garden, painting bird houses, planting a native garden, mural painting, building trails around the school and making signs for the trail.

AmeriCorps would like to thank our donors: Village Ace Hardware and a grant from Lake of the Sky Garden Club for $800 which will fund the entirety of our native garden project.

The Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation AmeriCorps Program, now in its 13th year, has grown to 17 full time members.

This program has become essential in helping agencies enhance services and meet the needs of our rural community. AmeriCorps members come to Lake Tahoe from all parts of the country, bringing with them their knowledge, talents and passion for building a better world.
