Record enrollment and new partnership for Girls on the Run — Sierras

TAHOE/TRUCKEE, Calif. — Spring has sprung and Girls on the Run — Sierras (GOTR-S) continues to blossom with record enrollment for the positive youth development program. GOTR-S added two new sites: Sierra Expeditionary Academy in Truckee and Sierra House in South Lake Tahoe to its eight returning school sites. With 130 girls enrolled in the program at 10 schools around Lake Tahoe this is the largest season to date.

It also marks a 33 percent increase in enrollment from last year.

The Girls on the Run mission is “to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running.” Almost 40 women volunteer as coaches and positive adult role models for the third to fifth-grade girls. The 20-lesson curriculum teaches girls life skills including exercise and nutrition and how to cope with bullying, peer pressure, and gossip.

This season 55 low-income girls received financial assistance to participate the program. GOTR-S has never turned a girl away from the program due to her family’s inability to pay the program registration fee. GOTR-S would like to thank the following foundations and community groups for supporting the programs: Chris Parks Scholarship Fund, Chintu Gudiya Foundation, El Dorado Community Foundation, Northstar California as part of the Vail Resorts ECHO Foundation, PDL BioPharma care of the Parasol Community Foundation, Rotary Club of Tahoe City, Rotary Club of Truckee, Truckee Tahoe Community Foundation, and the Tahoe Mountain Resorts Foundation.

Big Blue Adventure

GOTR-S welcomes a new partnership with Big Blue Adventure for the Girls on the Run 5K on June 8. “New this year, the Girls on the Run 5K is part of the Truckee Running Festival,” said Danielle Rees, executive director of Girls on the Run – Sierras. “The 5K fun run is the culmination of the 10-week program and we are excited to partner with Big Blue Adventures to grow this community event.”

The Girls on the Run 5K will be held on the Truckee River Legacy Trail at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday June 8. The course starts at the Truckee Riverview Sportspark, located at 12304 Joerger Drive.

In addition to the girls in the program and their adult running buddies, the 5K is open to the community as an annual fundraiser for the nonprofit organization.
