SOS launches Tahoe summer program

TAHOE/TRUCKEE, Calif. — For many in Lake Tahoe, summer means a season of outdoor adventures, as the mountains and lake come alive with cyclists, hikers, boaters and climbers. SOS Outreach is a youth development nonprofit that ensures those experiences are extended to underserved youth in the community. Using outdoor sports as a tool to engage participants, SOS inspires students to make positive decisions for healthy and successful lives.

Expanding from winter-based experiences, SOS now offers a year-round sports-based leadership development curriculum. With more than 200 local participants enrolled in winter programming, 26 of them are continuing in Tahoe’s inaugural year-round curriculum, this summer will be SOS’s most impactful yet.

Summer programs will officially launch in Tahoe with a “Backyard Adventure” experience for 14 students. The program will introduce participants to various outdoor activities including stand-up paddleboarding, mountain biking, Frisbee golf, and skateboarding. During the day trips, program staff will reinforce the core value training from the winter curriculum, discussing the meanings and applications of courage, discipline, integrity, wisdom, compassion, and humility.

The week’s program is the first of many summer SOS trips. Additional experiences will include rock climbing, horseback riding, and hiking. Participants will be exposed to continuous core value training, and the benefits of positive adult mentorship.

SOS programs equip students to build healthy and successful futures. Tahoe participants will all complete at least one service project this summer, giving back to their community through serving at the Shakespeare Festival, working on gardening projects for the Tahoe Environmental Research Center, and other activities.

Launching the year-round program in Tahoe fulfills SOS’s long-term goal of increasing positive touch points with youth. Throughout the year, these 26 Tahoe participants will complete up to 30 days of outdoor adventure sports, leadership development, and service learning. By increasing student’s time with their mentors, SOS maximizes the positive impacts of the curriculum.

Since 1993, SOS Outreach has inspired positive decision making for healthy and successful lives. For more information, click here.
