Glenshire students will trick-or-treat for UNICEF

TRUCKEE, Calif. — Get your spare change ready! Glenshire Elementary School students will trick-or-treat for UNICEF.

On Halloween night, students will once again trick-or-treat for more than their own benefit; they will also carry orange collection boxes and seek donations to support UNICEF. Last year, local students raised hundreds of dollars to help UNICEF provide emergency services, immunizations, education, better nutrition and safe water to less fortunate children in more than 150 countries.

The 62-year-old “Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF” program gives local children the opportunity to learn about the difficulties many children face and to help make a difference in the lives of others.

Glenshire Elementary’s 500-plus students have participated in the Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF program since 2001, making this their 13th year participating. All students attend an assembly to learn about UNICEF’s mission and how their contributions can make a difference and then they can elect to participate in the program on Halloween night. Kids participating in the program carry orange UNICEF collection boxes, collecting small bills or change while Trick-or-Treating at local households.

In the past 12 years, students have raised more than $25,000 in small donations and matched funds (through UNICEF’s corporate donors). All monies go directly to UNICEF to be used in national and international programs for kids, including improvements in emergency services, immunizations, education, nutrition and safe water. This is the largest, ongoing fundraiser Glenshire Elementary in which students participate that isn’t a benefit for their own classrooms or schools.

Thanks to the community for encouraging and supporting this Truckee tradition!
