Free preparation of federal and California tax returns is now available for households with income under $52,000.
This service helps people to receive all of the tax credits they are entitled to, which may include an Earned Income Tax Credit of up to $6,044.
The IRS reports that about 20 percent of people eligible for this credit do not claim it, potentially missing out on thousands of extra dollars in their federal income tax refunds. Last year, on average, the credit boosted refunds for eligible workers by $2,200.
Starting Jan. 29 and continuing until the April 15 filing deadline, tax preparation appointments are available on all Wednesdays and Thursdays from 4-8 p.m. Saturday appointments are also available on Feb. 8, March 8 and April 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
All appointments will be held at the Donald W. Reynolds Community Non-Profit Center, 948 Incline Way in Incline Village. To make an appointment, call Tahoe Family Solutions at 775-298-0004.
Tax returns are prepared by IRS-certified volunteers under the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program operated by Tahoe Family Solutions. TFS is a nonprofit organization providing counseling, camping and education services to children and families living along the North Shore of Lake Tahoe.
According to TFS Executive Director Robin Glasgow, “We want to ensure that local households have access to quality tax services so they get all of the tax credits available to them. This helps the people who live and work here, and helps the local economy by keeping more resources in the community.”
VITA representatives are also available to meet with local businesses and other organizations to provide information about the free tax preparation services and answer questions.
