Sept. 14, 1922- April 30, 2014

After 91 years of life, Elaine F. Curnow passed away on April 30, 2014 in Truckee, California. She was surrounded by her family and the kind staff of the Tahoe Forest Hospital Extended Care Center. Elaine is survived by her only child, daughter Janice Ganong and her son-in-law, Richard Ganong of Alpine Meadows, and her 4 grandchildren: Alison Ganong Krause of Truckee, Megan Ganong Shirley of Alpine Meadows, Travis Ganong of Alpine Meadows and Derek Ganong of Miami. She was predeceased in death by her two husbands and by her sister, Doris Gollar of Ohio. She was born Elaine Virginia Ferguson in Cincinnati, Ohio on September 14, 1922. She always loved school and ended up attending college at the University of Cincinnati at a time when only 3% of women earned a bachelors degree. She graduated in 1945, Summa Cum Laude, earning a Master’s Degree in Early European History. She married Ray Fritz, her college sweetheart, in 1945 in North Hollywood, California and they had 1 child, Janice Ganong. After Ray’s death in 1970, she was remarried to Harold Curnow, school psychologist, in 1975. Elaine was an educator and leader all of her life. In Burbank, she taught 1st - 3rd grades, was a reading specialist, and finally an Elementary Principal for 17 years before retiring in 1986. She served as president for organizations such as P.E.O, an international philanthropic and educational sisterhood, the Women’s Club, and church positions such as Women’s Associations, Circle Leader, deacon and elder. Elaine lived in Southern California until 1988, when she bought a second home in Alpine Meadows to be closer to her daughter, Jan and her grandchildren. She was extremely proud of all of them. She was an avid golfer, bridge player, and enjoyed her participation in the Tahoe City Women’s Club and Christ the King Lutheran Church when she was in Tahoe. She did not enjoy the snow and always returned to Indian Wells and later Minden/Gardnerville, Nevada when winter approached. Elaine Curnow had a substantial life for 90 years. She was admired for her knowledge, integrity, and style. We loved her for her kindness and generous spirit and will miss her very much. A memorial service will be held at Christ the King Lutheran Church on Dollar Hill in Tahoe City on Sunday, May 11th at 2pm.
