Obituary: Marjorie Plumley Lipsky

On May 3, 2013, Margie passed away quietly at her home in Modesto. She was born October 1, 1932, in Atlantic, Iowa, to Leland & Hazel Plumley; the second of their two daughters. The family moved to California in 1942, where she attended Sequoia High School in Redwood City, graduating in 1950. She went on to attend University of the Pacific in Stockton. There, she met Garth Lipsky and they were married in 1952.

Margie and Garth spent their early years together in southern California, in Garden Grove and Brea, then returned north to Fremont in the sixties. In 1974, they moved to Modesto, where Garth served as City Manager until 1990. Garth preceded Margie in death in 1992.

She is survived by two children: Ross Lipsky of Modesto and Dana Lipsky of Tahoe City, three grandchildren: David, Cassandra and Steven Lipsky of Modesto, sister: Donna (Richard) Cesarin of San Carlos, nephews: Craig (Sheila) Cesarin and Brett Cesarin, and niece Cheryl (Dave) Ringman, and her beloved dog, Foxy.

Margie was honored as an Outstanding Woman of Stanislaus County in1986, due in part to her many volunteer activities. She was a lifelong member of the League of Women Voters, a dedicated docent for the McHenry Mansion Foundation, served on the Board of Directors at Doctors Medical Center, raised funds for Children’s Home Society, and was elected “Most Motivated Volunteer” for her service to the Hartford Place Homeowners Association.

As an exceptionally caring and generous person, she supported many worthwhile causes including ASPCA, the World Wildlife Federation, Habitat for Humanity, League to Save Lake Tahoe, and others too numerous to list.

Margie’s favorite activities included dancing, spending time at her vacation home in Lake Tahoe, attending symphony performances and theatrical productions, reading and participating in her book club, and entertaining and creating amazing meals for family and friends. In her later years, she traveled and had lots of exciting adventures with her special friend and companion, Gordon Lent.

Special thanks are extended to Margie’s many wonderful friends and neighbors for their heartfelt prayers, loving thoughts, kind words and caring deeds during the last weeks of her life.

Before her death, Margie requested that no funeral services be held. If you would like to make a remembrance of Margie, please send a charitable contribution to the ASPCA, Community Hospice or the McHenry Mansion Foundation.
