Obituary: Jim Casey

1950-2013 | Lake Tahoe, California

James Anthony Casey, responsible, caring and loving son, brother, friend, husband, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully at his home in Tahoe City, August 5, surrounded by his wife, children and grandchildren.

Born in Des Moines, Iowa, December 8,1950 to Joseph E. Casey and Rosemary L. Casey, Jim was an avid yachtsman, competitive golfer, community benefactor, voracious reader, world traveler, winemaker, musician, superb cook, and a successful businessman (contractor, craftsman, investor) during his forty years in Tahoe, City. As a part-time resident in Punta de Mita, Nayarit, Mexico, he championed the protection of the endangered Olive Ridely Sea Turtle.

Always up for a party, Jim’s door was always open for visiting family and friends. He loved a table filled with people, fervent dialogue, laughter, great food and wine. With a keen intellect and an unparalleled swift wit, Jim was a rock to many people.

He faced life with passion and vigor, unafraid of risk, always helping family and friends with a leg up to improve their life situation, fostering the highest potential in himself and others. He remained positive and heroic as he tenaciously addressed the physical obstacles presented to him.

His legacy is not in the homes he built or the boats he sailed, but in the character of his children and grandchildren, and the numerous other children he mentored, helped through school, or redirected onto a constructive life path.

Jim is survived by his wife, Jamie, his two sons, Forrest and Caleb, four grandchildren and six siblings. He will be dearly missed and will live always in our hearts. In lieu of flowers, please support the Jim Casey Memorial Fund at Bank of the West, 150 W Lake Blvd., Tahoe City, CA 96145 for initiatives important to him.
