Gary William House, 65, of Truckee, California, died on November 1, 2013 after battling a lengthy illness with cancer.
Gary was born in Richmond, California. His parents were Lydia and step-father James Derr, and the late Eugene House. He graduated from Richmond High School and attended DeAnza Junior College. After working at Standard Oil, Gary decided that he did not want to live in the bay area so he moved to Reno, Nevada and got a job at Harrah’s casino.
In 1982 he started working at Boomtown where he stayed for nearly 30 years. His friendly smile and sincerity kept customers, including many Truckee locals, coming back specifically to see him. In 1976, he married his wife, Deborah and they built a home in Truckee where they have lived since January 1980.
Gary was an avid sportsman who loved to hunt and fish. He shared his love of the outdoors with his family on their many skiing and camping outings, along with many road trips across the country. He was a very kind and compassionate person which prompted him to volunteer for the Truckee Fire Department in the mid-80’s as an EMT.
Gary is survived by: his wife Deborah; his daughter Lindsey, son-in-law Derek, and grand-daughter Chloe Billings from Montgomery, Alabama; son Matthew and future daughter-in-law Zoeann Nash from Truckee, California; mother Lydia and step-father Jim Derr of Peoria, Arizona; and brother Michael House and family from Salem, Oregon.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Truckee Performing Arts Center, 10046 Church Street on Saturday, November 16, 2013 at 1-4 p.m.
