Truckee baseball | Wolverines win one, lose two at Fallon

The Truckee baseball team went 1-2 in its first Division I-A series at Fallon this past weekend.

The Wolverines got off to a good start, opening the league series with a 5-3 win Friday afternoon. The Greenwave got the best of the visitors on both ends of Saturday’s doubleheader, however, winning 9-3 and 11-4 to take the series.

The Guiragossian brothers pitched Truckee to victory in the opener, which went to extra innings before Truckee scored two runs in the top of the 10th and held on for the win.

Riley Guiragossian started and went six innings, allowing one earned run (three total) on seven hits, while Miles Guiragossian pitched four scoreless innings in relief to earn the win. Miles Guiragossian did not allow a hit.

Truckee out-hit Fallon 10-7, with Teagan Pado, Cameron Hollabaugh and Gavin Broad leading the way with two hits apiece, and Pado, Riley Guiragossian, Hollabaugh and Bradley VanSchoonhoven each contributing an RBI. Thor Retzlaff and Ty Vaio also had a hit.

VanSchoonhoven started and went the distance in the first game Saturday. He gave up 10 hits and nine runs, although only six were earned as the Wolverines committed seven errors behind him.

Tristen Salazar threw a complete game and earned the win, holding the Wolverines to only four hits — one each by Pado, both Guiragossians and Hollabaugh — and one earned run. Truckee scored once in the first inning and added two in the top of the seventh.

Vaio and JJ Bellon pitched the final game. Vaio threw four innings, allowing five earned runs, while Bellon allowed five earned runs in two innings.

The Wolverines managed six hits. Hollabaugh rounded out a hot offensive series with a 3-for-4 performance, including a double and an RBI, while Pado and both Guiragossians each had one hit.

Truckee is now 1-2 in league play and 1-7 overall. Fallon is 2-2 in league and 4-3-1 overall.

Truckee is scheduled to play a league game at Sparks on Tuesday, April 1, and host a league doubleheader against South Tahoe on Saturday, April 5, at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
