Incline baseball | Highlanders sweep past White Pine

The Incline baseball team is 2-0 in league after winning both ends of a Division III doubleheader against visiting White Pine on Saturday, 13-3 and 16-9.

Incline banged out 16 hits in the league-opening game, while junior pitcher Tommy Dolan struck out eight batters in four innings en route to the win.

White Pine struck early, scoring all three of its runs in the first inning. The Highlanders answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the first, then scored at least one run in second through fifth inning to end the game on the 10-run mercy rule.

Jack Clouthier and Dolan led the offense with three RBIs apiece. Dolan was 4-for-4 with a double and Clouthier was 2-for-3 with two home runs.

Ben Snyder went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, while Basxsimo Battel was 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI. Tommy Thompson had two hits, including a double, and a stolen base, Alex Barnard had a hit and RBI, and Owen Graffis had a double.

The Highlanders out-slugged the Bobcats in Game 2, collecting 16 hits while scoring in every inning but the fourth and seventh.

Clouthier and Dolan both drove in three runs to lead the offense again. Dolan hit a home run and two doubles, and Clouthier hit his third home run of the series and added a double.

Snyder went 3-for-3 with two RBIs, Bryan Banuelos had a double and two RBIs, Thompson had a single, double and two RBIs, and Nicky Witty had a double, single and RBI. Battel contributed three hits.

Battel and Witty pitched, with Battel giving up five earned runs in 3.1 innings and Witty three runs in 3.2 innings. Witty recorded eight strikeouts and Batttel four.

Incline opened the season with a 5-2 nonleague win at Virginia City last Tuesday.

Thompson, Clouthier and Dolan each had two hits and an RBI, while Clouthier started and struck out 11 in five innings to earn the win.

On Tuesday, Incline lost a nonleague game against visiting Portola, 28-20, after giving up 14 runs in the top of the seventh inning. Clouthier, Dolan and Thompson all homered for Incline.

The Highlanders (3-1 overall) are scheduled to play a league series at West Wendover on Saturday and host Virginia City next Thursday, April 3. They host a league doubleheader against Silver Stage on Saturday, April 5.

Incline softball

The Incline softball team is off to a 2-2 start overall and 0-2 in Division III play after losing both ends of a league doubleheader to White Pine, 15-9 and 20-8, on Saturday and defeating Portola 5-4 on Tuesday.

Incline senior Kierra Keller pitched a complete game against Portola to pick up the win. She allowed only five hits and four walks while also helping her cause at the plate with a solo home run. Keller has now hit a home run in all four games.

The Highlanders managed five hits, one apiece by Keller, Kortney Solis, Taylor Orblych, Elise Nelson and Karyss Thompson, who had a triple and two RBIs. Nelson also contributed an RBI.

Elizabeth Resney was named Incline’s Player of the Game, as she put the ball in play with the bases loaded and two outs in the sixth inning, which led to a Portola error and two runs.

Incline couldn’t keep pace with White Pine in a couple of offensive games Saturday.

The Highlanders amassed 17 hits in Game 1, led by Maddie Findlen’s 4-for-5 performance with a triple and RBI, and Keller’s 2-for-4 game with a home run and four RBIs. Nelson was 3-for-4 with a double and RBI, and Thompson was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Briana Barraza, Resney, Harmony Bates, Orblych and Caroline May each contributed one hit. Findlen was Incline’s Player of the Game.

Incline kept the offense rolling in Game 2 with 13 hits, again led by Keller, who was 4-for-4 with a home run, two doubles and four RBIs. Nelson also went 4-for-4 with an RBI, while Bates had two hits and Solis, May and Thompson each had one. Keller was named Player of the Game.

The Highlanders play a league series at West Wendover on Saturday and host a league series against Silver Stage next Saturday, April 5.
