Pop Warner scholar-athletes recognized

A number of Truckee Pop Warner players were recently honored at the Pop Warner Little Scholars Regional All-American Scholars banquet in Vancouver, Wash.

Truckee’s Pacific Northwest region consists of 12 leagues in Northern California, Northern Nevada, Oregon, Washington and Alaska.

Truckee Pop Warner was represented at the regional banquet by three of its Academic All-Americans — Jacob Bullion (Second Team), Nathan Dalbol (Honorable Mention) and Connor McMullen (Honorable Mention). In all Truckee had 14 athletes/scholars qualify for regional All-American status (see sidebar).

There were close to 250 regional scholars in attendance at the banquet, all of whom were eligible for various door prizes and 10 Pop Warner Scholarships ranging in value from $100 to $1,000. Bullion was Truckee’s lone prize winner, winning a set of Beats ear-buds donated by Sagebrush Empire league.

Pop Warner Little Scholars, Inc., (PWLS) is the only national youth sports organization in the United States that requires its participants to perform adequately in the classroom before permitting them to play. Each year, the most academically accomplished Pop Warner kids compete for Academic All-American status.

A minimum 96 percent grade-point average is required to apply for All-American status. After the applications have been processed, a final score is calculated for each student that consists of up to 100 points (85 percent) for the student’s grades for the prior school year.

This process is open to all qualifying cheerleaders and football players in any Pop Warner program. After the applications have been processed, Pop Warner determines First Team All-Americans, Second Team All-Americans and Honorable Mention Scholars at the Regional level.

All First Team and Second Team Regional All-Americans are then eligible for consideration for National All-American status.

A total of 1,285 athletes/scholars qualified for Academic All-American status in the Pacific Northwest region.
