Incline golf | Mitchell Cornell tops field at Eagle Valley

The Incline golf team opened the season with a second-place finish in a cold and windy Division III tournament at Eagle Valley Golf Course last Thursday.

Whittell claimed the victory with a team score of 443. Incline was second with a 484 and was followed by Sierra Lutheran with a 507. Yerington, Sage Ridge, North Tahoe and Hawthorne competed but did not have enough golfers to record team scores.

Incline sophomore Mitchell Cornell earned tournament medalist honors by firing a 71. Cooper Griffin of Yerington was second with a 74, while Incline junior Dylan Smith was third with a 76 and Incline sophomore Bryan Golombik was fourth with a 78.

For North Tahoe, Zachary Kriston led the Lakers by shooting a 90, which tied for 11th. Colton Nordby shot a 113, Simon Wyss 124 and Kevin Caravelli 153.

Among other Incline players, Peter Larson shot a 114, Johnny Lockhart 145 and Brandon Swick 154. All three are freshmen.

“We have an interesting team,” said longtime Incline coach Joe Humasti. “We have about 50 percent experienced players and 50 percent without experience. But our scores will drop because they (Incline golfers) are dedicated and listen to instruction.

“We should be a very competitive team by the end of the season.”

In addition to the crew that competed at Eagle Valley, Humasti expects sophomore Kelsey Philpott to help the Highlanders when he joins the team, hopefully next week.

“They all have great attitudes. We have no seniors, so that’s good for the future,” Humasti said, adding that Incline’s goal is to place among the top three at the Northern Division III regional tournament on May 15, which would qualify the Highlanders for state.
