Betsy Nye, Paul Sweeney impressive in Hardrock 100

Few athletes know the 100.5-mile Hardrock Endurance Run course quite like Betsy Nye.

On July 12 Nye, an experienced ultrarunner from Truckee, recorded her 13th finish in what is widely considered the most difficult 100-mile foot race in the country.

Nye finished third among women and 59th overall in a field of 100 runners who reached the finish line within the 48-hour cutoff. Nye, who won the Colorado race in 2003, posted a time of 42 hours, 22 minutes, 12 seconds.

At age 50, she’s now finished more than 30 races of 100 miles.

Truckee’s Paul Sweeney also recorded a quality finish in what was his seventh Hardrock 100, as he crossed the line in 31st place with a time of 37:30:36.

Ultrarunning phenom Kilian Jornet of Spain raced to victory while setting a course record in a time of 22:41:33. The previous record was 23:23, set by Kyle Skaggs in 2008.

Darcy Africa was the top woman for the third year in a row, placing 11th overall in 29:49:58.

The Hardrock 100 takes place in the rugged San Juan Mountains in southern Colorado and features an elevation gain/loss greater than running from sea level to the top of Mt. Everest and back. The course sends athletes over 12,000 feet 13 times and over 13,000 feet seven times. It tops out at Handies Peak, at 14,048 feet.

Exactly one week after her finish, Nye paced Truckee runner Helen Pelster for 30 miles in the Tahoe Rim Trail 100-Mile Endurance Run.

Truckee runner 3rd in San Diego 100

Last month, Truckee’s Gretchen Brugman recorded a third-place finish among women and was 20th overall out of 142 finishers in the San Diego 100-Mile Endurance Run.

Brugman posted a time of 23:33:30. Jeff Kozak of Bishop took the overall win in 19:24:22, and Jenny Capel of Reno was the top woman and fourth overall in 20:08:46.
