Wiens, Nash win Tahoe Trail 100K

More than 400 mountain bikers competed in the Tahoe Trail 100K and 50K races at Northstar California Resort this past Saturday, with top finishers in the 100K receiving a chance to race in the Leadville Trail 100 in Colorado.

Riders in the 100K negotiated two 50-kilometer loops, including sections along the historic Tevis Trail and iconic Painted Rock.

Dave Wiens of Gunnison, Colo. — a six-time winner of the Leadville Trail 100 — won the 100K with a time of 4 hours, 1 minute, 53 seconds. That was fast enough to hold off Carter Shaver of Golden, Colo., who finished runner-up in 4:06:39, and John Hornbeck of Wildomar, Calif., who was third in 4:14:42.

Jesse Smith, 35, of Truckee was the top local finisher, crossing the line in fourth place with a time of 4:17:27.

The 49-year-old Wiens remains a tough act to beat. One of the most successful mountain bikers in history, he was inducted into the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame in 2000 and is known for defeating seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong and Floyd Landis in the 2007 Leadville Trail 100. He also defeated Armstrong in 2008.

Truckee Olympian Katerina Nash is a pretty well-established mountain bike racer herself. The 36-year-old raced to a first-place finish among women and was 18th overall in a field of 396 racers in the 100K, posting a time of 4:36:38. A total of 41 women were entered in the 100K.

Laura O’Meara, 31, of San Anselmo, Calif., was the second woman and 28th overall with a time of 4:46:14, and Lesley Paterson, 33, of San Diego was third among women and 52nd overall in 4:54:29.

Sian Turner, 32, of Truckee placed sixth in the women’s field and 95th overall with a time of 5:14:08. Genevieve Evans, 40, of Carnelian Bay was the 11th woman, in 5:43:42.

Truckee’s Conrad Snover, 39, who was the top racer out of nine entrants in the single-speed division, finished 11th overall in 4:27:25, Troy Deibert, 43, of Truckee placed 15th in 4:35:24, Nate Freed, 32, of Tahoe City was 24th in 4:42:21, and Denton Earnhardt, 41, of Truckee was 25th in 4:42:26.

“It’s always nice to see how many great local riders we have,” said Rachael Woods, senior manager of communications for Vail Resorts.

Other top Tahoe-area racers included Skye Allsop of Truckee (35th), Justin Eatinger of Incline Village (40th), Andy Scott of Truckee (43rd) and Garry Morgan of Truckee (67th).

Meanwhile in the 50K, Jordan Kobert, 39, of Kentfield, Calif., took the win with a time of 2:27:58, while Debra Hakansson, 56, of Truckee placed first among women and seventh overall in 2:53:42.

Ryan Icanberry of Reno was second overall in the 50K and Kari Johnson of San Francisco third. Jennifer Camoriano of Mesa, Ariz., was the second woman and Kristen Tasker of Los Altos was third.
