High Fives Foundation’s TRAiNS fundraiser raises $5,000 for charities

ALPINE MEADOWS — The TRAiNS Freestyle Ski and Snowboard Contest brought together 30 competitors in a high-flying aerial display at Alpine Meadows Ski Resort this past Saturday.

The High Fives Foundation’s annual event donated $5,000 to a variety of selected charitable organizations, including The Sarah Burke Foundation, The Bob Woodruff Foundation and The Shane McConkey Foundation.

Competition categories included Best 540, Best Backflip, Best Switch Trick and Best TRAiN, all performed on a large tabletop jump that included three different takeoffs.

“The event was a huge success and raised a lot of money for three very deserving charities,” said High Fives Foundation Executive Director Roy Tuscany.

Skiers Nick Goepper and Kyle Smaine took the duel win in the Best 540 contest. They both donated their $1,000 cash purse to The Sarah Burke Foundation.

Snowboarder Toby Miller won Best Backflip, and also donated his $1,000 cash purse to The Sarah Burke Foundation, while skier Raleigh White won Best Switch Trick. He donated his $1,000 prize to The Bob Woodruff Foundation.

The Best TRAiNS Team brought in a $2,00 cash prize, which was donated to The Shane McConkey Foundation. The team consisted of snowboarder Will Mayo and skiers Harry Meyer, Jason Arens, Becca Roberts, Will Wesson, Khai Krepela, Noah Wallace, Garrett Russell and High Fives Winter Empowerment Athlete Jake Hickman, who returned to the competition this year after recovering from a traumatic spinal cord injury in 2011.

Following the on-the-snow action, 75 people gathered at Twenty-Two Bistro and Bar in the Village at Squaw Valley for the TRAiNS 2013 Conductor’s Dinner, which included a silent auction, raffle and wine sampling.

The High Fives Foundation raises funds to support injured athletes through laid-back and fun fundraising events, like TRAiNS. The next marquee event for the Foundation will be the 3rd Annual Charity Golf Tournament, which is scheduled for Thursday, May 16 at 11 a.m. at The Golf Course at Grey’s Crossing.
