North Tahoe, Truckee golf | Lakers, Wolverines wrap up regular seasons in Edgewood tournament

The North Tahoe and Truckee golf teams ended their regular seasons with a mixed-division tournament at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course in Stateline on Friday.

A total of 17 schools and 92 golfers participated, with Division I-A Lowry taking the team win with a low score of 398 between its top five players. Elko was second, at 433, and Spring Creek third at 437. Incline was the top Division III school and fourth overall, with a team score of 438.

Truckee finished seventh overall and fourth among D-IA programs with a score of 473, and North Tahoe was ninth overall and fourth among DIII teams with a 484.

Senior Buster Fenley led the Lakers and placed 10th overall, carding an 83. Teammate Daniel Vandewiele shot a 93, Riley McGuire-McCarthy a 97, Trevor Semmens 100, Zachary Kriston 111 and Nash Baehr 126.

For the Wolverines, Sam Mohun and Zak Pettit tied for 33rd with 92s. Jordan Fereira shot a 94, Jared Huey a 97, Brandon Flora 98 and Paul Buschmann 109.

Nick Marich of White Pine earned tournament medalist honors by firing a 74. Cole Erquiaga of Lowry was second with a 75, while Lowry’s Ethan Gray, Incline’s Mitchell Cornell and defending DIII state champ Ty Pickel of White Pine all tied for third with 77s.

The Lakers also competed in a DIII tournament at Thunder Canyon Golf Course on April 29, where they finished second to Whittell with a team score of 484 to the Warriors’ 452.

Cornell posted the low round with a 75, Incline teammate Dylan Smith was second with an 85 and Steven Beeler from Whittell was third with an 86.

McGuire-McCarthy led North Tahoe with an 89, which was good enough for fifth place. Fenley and Semmens had a pair of 88s, Vandewiele a 104, Kriston 111 and Patrick MaCauley 114.

The Lakers will compete in the Northern Division III regional tournament at Ruby View Golf Course in Elko on Wednesday, where they hope to qualify for the state championship tournament as a team by finishing among the top three.

The Northern Division I-A will not conduct a regional tournament, and instead will use the final regular-season standings for state qualification. The top three teams and the top five individuals on non-qualifying teams advance to state.

With one tournament remaining, hosted by Truckee at Old Greenwood on Thursday, the leading teams include Lowry, Elko and Spring Creek, while Fernley’s Justice Akerson (84.2), Dayton’s Austin Purdy (87.6), South Tahoe’s Morgan Petrogallo (87.7), Dayton’s Jake Turner (89.5) and South Tahoe’s Connor Shaw (91.3) currently own the five lowest averages from non-qualifying teams. The Wolverines have three eligible players who are within striking distance of qualifying for state, said Truckee coach Kevin Waters — Flora (96), Buschmann (97.5) and Fereira (98.8).
