Far West Nordic skiers selected to participate in elite training camps

Two of the top Nordic ski racers from the Far West Region — Sugar Bowl Academy’s Katrin Larusson (2013) and Hannah Halvorsen (2016) — have been selected to attend the U.S. Ski Team’s Western Region Elite Group training camps this summer.

Larusson will be attending the elite training camp for her third straight year.

“Katrin has been one of the top skiers in the nation for the last three years, and participating in the Regional Elite Camp has been a big contributor to her success,” said Sugar Bowl Academy Head Nordic Coach Jeff Schloss.

Halvorsen’s selection as only a 15-year-old rising sophomore also represents a special distinction, Schloss said.

“For Hannah to be going to Regional Elite Group, that’s a little bit unusual, somebody as young as her. Usually it’s going to be 17-, 18- and 19-year-olds.

“I think it’s really important for the top Sugar Bowl Academy skiers to be training with the top skiers in the nation, and also to be getting exposed to the U.S. Ski Team coaches.”

The Regional Elite Group is typically composed of the top 20 skiers in the Western Region, which includes Alaska. The training camp takes place in June at U.S. Ski Team headquarters in Park City, Utah.

Halvorsen’s summer training won’t end in Park City, as she has also been selected to attend the J2 National Talent Camp at Marquette, Mich., in July. The camp fields the top 20 J2 (ages 14-15) Nordic ski racers in the entire nation.

“I’m thrilled at the opportunity to train with and get to know some of the best skiers and coaches in the nation,” said Halvorsen.

Others from the Far West selected for the talent camp include Sugar Bowl Academy’s Sam Zabell, North Tahoe High School’s Dylan Syben and Julien Bordes, and Truckee High School’s Lizzie Larkens.
