Incline senior Brendon Steinmeyer will represent the Highlanders as the sole representative in the 32nd annual Sertoma Classic all-star football game.
The game will be held at Damonte Ranch High School in Reno on June 21. Gates open at 6 p.m. Kickoff is at 7.
The showcase event features the best recently graduated senior players from 30 participating high schools in Northern Nevada, pitting the Blue all-stars against the Silver. the multi-skilled Steinmeyer, listed as a running back on the roster, will play on the Blue team.
Longtime Truckee head coach Bob Shaffer will get one final coaching hurrah after announcing his retirement this past winter, as he and his staff will lead the Silver team into battle against the Blue team. The Blue squad will be led by Damonte Ranch coach Shawn Dupris and his staff.
Shaffer and crew also coached the Silver all-stars in last year’s game, as well as 2010. This year’s game will mark Shaffer’s seventh Sertoma Classic.
The Blue Team is made up of players from Division I schools McQueen, Damonte Ranch, Carson and Reno, Division I-A members Elko, Fernley, South Tahoe and Sparks, and Division III North Tahoe, Incline, Pershing County, Silver Stage and Yerington.
The Silver team consists of players from Division I schools Reed, Spanish Springs, Hug, Galena and Bishop Manogue, Division I-A Truckee, Fallon, Lowry, Dayton and Spring Creek, and Division III Battle Mountain.
In last year’s game, special teams gaffes enabled the Blue all-stars to break the three-year winning streak of the Silver, as three bad snaps led to 14 straight points by the Blue squad en route to a 34-27 victory.
The game, which is sponsored by the Sparks Sertoma Club, first began in 1981.
