Truckee volleyball | Wolverines put up fight against DI state champs

TRUCKEE, Calif. — The final score does not indicate how tough the Truckee volleyball team played visiting Spanish Springs on Tuesday night.

Truckee dropped its home opener in straight sets, 26-28, 22-25 and 20-25, against the defending Division I state champions. But the Wolverines made the Cougars work hard for the win, as they held leads in each game before the larger school pulled away down the stretch of each.

The first set was particular close as the teams battled back and forth from the start, with Truckee senior Mackenzie Redner smashing kills for the hosts and a handful of big Spanish Springs hitters establishing their own strong presence at the net.

The Wolverines led by as many as four points midway through the set, at 17-13, while the Cougars never led by more than two. After 16 ties and 10 lead changes, however, the visitors scored the final two points to earn the win after knotting the score at 26. Truckee missed its opportunity to put the set away when leading 24-23.

Set 2 was tightly contested as well, with eight ties and four lead changes, while Truckee hung with Spanish Springs through the first 18 points of the third set before the Cougars ended the match with a 7-3 run.

Redner finished with 20 kills, seven digs and two service aces. Lauren Peak had four kills, seven digs and an ace, and Chelsea Mohun had 24 assists and nine digs. Taylor Stevens and Elizabeth Costa added two kills apiece.

Truckee, which went 4-4 in the High Sierra Tournament in Reno last weekend, fell to 4-5 overall. Spanish Springs improved to 5-1.

In the mostly large-school High Sierra Tournament, the Wolverines defeated Del Oro (Calif.), 2-1, Ripon (Calif.), 2-1, Del Norte (Calif.), 2-0 and South Tahoe, 2-0. They lost to Bear River (Calif.), 2-0, Hoover (Calif.), 2-1, Reno, 2-1, and Del Norte, 2-0.

The Wolverines are scheduled to host Reed on Thursday, freshmen at 4 p.m., JV at 5 and varsity at 6. Truckee will host Dayton on Tuesday at the same times.
