The 40th annual Northstar Open tennis tournament this past weekend attracted a competitive field of local players as well as some who traveled from as far away as Arizona and Southern California.
The event hosted players ranging from 12 years old to 76 and skill levels ranging from 3.0 to 6.0 open players.
Father and son team Blain and Alec Wong took the win in the Mens 4.5 division against Joe Saarem and Joe Gryzmski. Zeke Straw, Northstar tennis director, and longtime teammate Chris Beye went on to win the Men’s 4.5 A Doubles back draw.
Another local favorite for the women’s division, Claire Perry and Carole Zwick from Incline, won the top honors in Women’s 4.0 doubles. Reno locals Holly Tretten and her partner Ryan Thornton handily took the win in mixed doubles again this year.
Some of the highlights of the tournament included resident Northstar pros Cody Kohlmoos, Conner Coates and Guillaume Tonelli. Kohlmoos and Coates played extremely well independently and as a team, both making it to the semifinals of the singles and doubles brackets.
Guillaume Tonelli, Northstar Tennis head pro, went on to win the doubles with Philippe Frayssinoux, a friend and fellow resident of Reno. Together the pair won the grand prize of $4,995 in prize money, North Star Vacation Rentals lodging packages and lift tickets.
Frayssinoux also won the Open singles against Tonelli, garnering an additional combined prize value of $6,200.
All who attended enjoyed some quality tennis, as well as great food and spirits.
