Truckee tennis | Boys claim second straight regional title

The Wolverines could get used to this kind of success.

The Truckee boys tennis team captured the Northern Division I-A regional championship for the second time in as many years Friday, this time with a 12-6 win over South Tahoe.

The road to regionals first had to pass through a solid challenge from Fallon in the semifinal round.

Truckee dominated the singles side, with Nico Gardella, Addison Dvoracek, Toby Ziegler and Colter Fellows winning all nine sets and giving up only three games in the process.

Fallon had some solid doubles play, with its No. 2 team of Wadsworth and Lealt winning all three of their sets. Truckee did beat the No. 1 seed in all three rounds, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the regional finals with a 14-4 victory.

“We did not face South Lake Tahoe during the regular season, but their scores against common competitors were nearly identical, suggesting a very tight matchup” said Truckee coach Rick Deeter.

The Wolverines needed to win one of several key matchups in order to get the edge, and that is exactly what happened.

Teagan Pado and Colin Gerrard bested Colton McHugh and Kyle Swain, the two seniors, in the No. 1-seed match. Aaron Deeter and Ethan Gotts won easily over Ryan Piazzo and Trevor Garon in the No. 2-seed matchup.

Truckee needed its doubles team of Brandon Flora and Eli Yale to beat South Tahoe’s Gabriel Tenocelotl and Daniel Sandborn to gain an early lead, which they did 6-3, making the doubles a clean sweep in round one.

Top seed Nico Gardella faced South Tahoe’s powerhouse singles player, Chad Kaassamani. The set went to a 5-5 tie before Gardella finally got the break and won 7-5. With Toby Zeigler taking out the No. 2 seed, Louie Marin, Truckee managed a 5-1 set lead after the first round.

The second round favored Truckee in four of the six sets, as higher seeds play lower seeds in the rotation. The big upset was that Truckee’s No. 3 doubles team, Flora and Yale, stunned South Tahoe’s No. 1 seed with a 6-4 win. That pushed Truckee to a 10-2 lead, assuring the victory by the end of the second round.

The third round favored South Tahoe, as its top seeds had the advantage. The Vikings won four sets in the final round. Deeter and Gotts beat McHugh and Swain in a tiebreaker, another upset match.

“The depth of our doubles teams was what gave Truckee the edge over a very tough South Tahoe team,” said Truckee coach Marc Pado.

Truckee heads to Las Vegas in two weeks as the top seed from the north. South Tahoe also advanced as the No. 2 seed.

Individual singles and doubles Northern Regional Championships are this Friday and Saturday, hosted at the Tahoe Donner Tennis Center. The first round starts on Friday with the girls doubles at 9 a.m. Singles are at 10:30 a.m., boys doubles at noon, and singles at 1:30 p.m. The quarterfinals will start at 2 p.m. for all players.
