North Tahoe soccer | Girls, boys pad league records

The North Tahoe soccer teams took care of business on the road this past weekend, as the boys shut out Battle Mountain 4-0 while the girls defeated Battle Mountain 15-0 and Pershing County 6-1.

Playing shorthanded with a few key injuries, the Laker girls got off to a slow start Friday at Pershing County (which does not have a boys program). Coach Kristin Carlson said both teams were bunching in the first half, perhaps due to what appeared to be a small field.

North Tahoe hit its groove in the second half, however, as the girls began making better runs and spreading out, allowing them to penetrate the Pershing County defense and net some goals.

In the end Valencia Covell and Fran English had scored two goals apiece, and Haley Perkins and Julia Semmens each put one away. Senior goalie Angela Wood provided strong keeper skills and leadership in the back, while Zoe Anderson, English, Kami Abi-Nader and Bryn Anderson all played solid games, Carlson said.

After staying the night in Battle Mountain — “everyone we met in that town, including the girls team, was very kind,” Carlson said — the Laker girls came out sharp against the Longhorns. Despite the final score, Carlson said Battle Mountain had a good goalie and a strong offside trap.

English scored four goals to lead the offensive charge. Anderson added three goals, Abi-Nader and Emma Sproehnle scored two apiece, and Wood, Zoe Anderson, Johanna Gur and Haley Perkins each scored one.

The North Tahoe girls are now 8-1-1 in Division III play and 8-3-1 overall.

In the boys game at Battle Mountain, the Lakers received a goal from four different players in the shutout victory — Ross Tester, José Chávez, Wildon DesLauriers and Lucas Earley. The Lakers are now 4-1-2 in the Division III and 6-8-2 overall.

North Tahoe plays at Fallon on Wednesday before heading across the state to White Pine (Ely) and West Wendover on Friday and Saturday. White Pine played the Laker boys to a 0-0 tie on Sept. 20.
